Mangaluru’s Upcoming Water Metro: A Sustainable Step Forward
Mangaluru is preparing to launch its own Water Metro, inspired by the success of the Kochi Water Metro in Kerala. Spearheaded by the Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB), the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP) aims to establish a sustainable, eco-friendly public transportation network along the city’s national waterways. This initiative marks a significant move toward green urban mobility in the region.
The Mangaluru Water Metro will operate along the Nethravathi (NW-74) and Gurupura (NW-43) rivers, connecting areas from Bajal to Maravoor. Spanning approximately 30 km, this waterway route will be a game-changer for communities along the banks, boosting local connectivity, supporting economic growth, and enhancing residents’ quality of life. Designed to offer a sustainable and affordable alternative to conventional transportation, the Water Metro aims to redefine commuting in Mangaluru by providing a clean, modern transit option.
As India’s second-largest water transport system after Kochi’s Water Metro, the Mangaluru project will feature a fleet of advanced catamaran boats powered by electric and diesel engines. Each boat will be equipped with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable, safe journey for daily commuters and tourists alike. With the Karnataka government’s support, KMB is working diligently to bring this ambitious plan to fruition.
Route and Proposed Stations
The Water Metro project will be rolled out in phases, beginning with a 30 km stretch from Bajal on the Nethravathi River to the Maravoor Bridge on the Gurupura River.
